Content Migration Plan Explained

The Content Migration Plan (CMP) determines which pages our team will migrate into your new site and which pages your team will handle after training. Here's how it works.

๐Ÿ“‹ Based on your approved sitemap ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Split between our team & yours ๐ŸŽ“ Your part happens after training

What is the Content Migration Plan?

The Content Migration Plan (or CMP as we call it) is a document that is identical to your approved sitemap. We use this document to determine which pages your team will migrate and which pages ours will.

If your budget allows, your team may not be responsible for any content migration. However, most of the time there is a set budget (for example, 12 hours).

The CMP document will outline all the pages from the approved sitemap with those highlighted in yellow as those our team will migrate into the new site, and those not highlighted as those your team will be responsible for post-training.

At any time you can request to increase your content migration budget.

๐Ÿ’ก

Don't worry about migration tasks yet. Updating the new site content will be very easy and not involve any technical skill, so we recommend not worrying about content migration tasks until you've had your training.

Example Content Migration Plan

Yellow rows are pages our team migrates within your budget. The rest are for your team to handle post-training.

This is a simplified example. Your CMP will reflect your approved sitemap and budget.

๐Ÿ“

Large sitemaps (50+ pages): If your approved sitemap is very extensive and we determine the level of effort required is excessive, our team will let you know that we anticipate a long window for migration on your part โ€” or that you may require additional content migration services for a cost.

What type of feedback to give

When you receive your CMP, focus your feedback on these two areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is it to migrate content? +
Not hard at all! The new site CMS has an interface similar to Microsoft Word or other word processing programs. We make it easy! It can be time consuming depending how detailed you want the pages to be, but you can always draft pages prior to launch that are not ready โ€” or you can have "content coming soon" on less important pages. Our team typically assigns ourselves the "hardest" or most "wow-worthy" pages so your team really only has to work on the easier pages.
How can we plan for our content migration? +
We recommend making sure the window after training and before launch gives your team time allocated to fine tune and polish your content. Your existing site will remain available during this time so you will easily have a reference point where needed.
What if we don't have the people or staff to help with migration? +
If you do not have users who will assist with copying and pasting content into the new site, we recommend considering an addendum to cover the additional migration for our team to assist.
When do we need to decide if we want you to help with remaining content migration? +
You can decide this post-training, but ideally at least 2 weeks before launch so we can accommodate the request. Last minute requests might potentially change launch timing.
